  • Comment: In the laboratory there are no fustian ranks, no brummagem aristocracies; the domain of Science is a republic, and all its citizens are brothers and equals, its princes of Monaco and its stonemasons of Cromarty meeting, barren of man-made gauds and meretricious decorations, upon the one majestic level! from Mark Twain's "Three Thousand Years among the Microbes"

Proteome Informatics

The field that has held my attention for the last nine years is proteomics. In "shotgun proteomics," we digest proteins with trypsin, separate the resulting peptides by liquid chromatography, and isolate and fragment them through tandem mass spectrometry. This produces piles of spectra, and proteome informatics creates tools that infer biological information from these data. Here at Vanderbilt I hope to continue developing algorithms for proteomics while laying a foundation on which similar tools for lipidomics can be established.
