Instructions to Los Alamos Computers for Configuring Workstations

Kernel

  • Install latest kernel and previous kernel, selectable at boot with default being the latest kernel

Additional packages to install on all machines

  1. xemacs
  2. wv
  3. antiword
  4. xless
  5. sylpheed (NOTE: must use apt-get -t unstable install sylpheed)
  6. sylpheed-doc (also for unstable)
  7. muttprint
  8. mozilla-firebird
  9. nedit
  10. abiword (from unstable)
  11. kile
  12. knotes (a KDE package)
  13. hevea
  14. dillo
  15. cupsys-bsd (makes lpr available, if LAC has not already added this)
  16. firestarter (don't configure or start)
  17. Try to update cups to include drivers for HP Laserjet 4000N and HP Color Laserjet 4500. If this is difficult to do, the builtin driver for HP 4 series works pretty well for the 4000N. NOTE We are ordering a Xerox Phaser 6250/DP color laser printer which has a CUPS driver available from Xerox. If possible it would be nice to have this driver installed. See http://www.office.xerox.com/cgi-bin/DriverD.pl?printer_type=6250.
  18. Servers to activate: sshd, samba
  19. Run gdmconfig; in security tab uncheck "Secure System Menu" then Close

Additional packages to install on configuration # 2 (for analysts):

  • Add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list:
    deb http://cran.us.r-project.org/bin/linux/debian sarge main
  • apt-get install r-base, r-doc-pdf, r-recommended
