If Citrix ICA Client is already installed, then ...

  • Go to https://vacagsouth.vpn.va.gov/vpn/index_piv.html (site will be phased out summer 2017) or newer site: https://CitrixAccess.va.gov.
  • Log in with vha09\VaUserName and VaPassword.
  • If given a link to "skip to log on", it bypasses unnecessary, sometimes glitchy, fluff.
  • Click on the R03 apps folder.
  • Click on the remote desktop icon.
    • This will either auto-open or download a .ica file, which you can open by clicking on it.
    • It's the Citrix ICA Client that lets you run the .ica file.
  • Remote desktop into a server as usual. We'll avoid posting VA server addresses on this open page.

To Install Citrix ICA Client

... on Linux

Follow the install instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CitrixICAClientHowTo.
   - I followed these exactly for use with Chrome and they worked great. - RG 2015 Sept

... on Windows

This tends to be super Windows friendly. If you follow your best guesses, you'll likely figure it out.

... on MAC OS

Download and install Citrix Receiver from citrix.com.
On 04 Dec 2015, the current version was at https://www.citrix.com/downloads/citrix-receiver/mac.html.
You may need to change your browser's settings for the Citrix plugin to "always allow."

Reset Password

If you're locked out because your password has expired, try going to http://gfe.vpn.va.gov/remoteupdate. If that doesn't work, call the VPN helpdesk (855-673-4357 option 6 then 1), where someone may ultimately direct you to this site in a way that will work. Note upon successfully changing your password the page will refresh to a login page showing "Authentication failed." That's a good sign. At that point, try logging into Citrix with your new password.

Other useful info

Test your VPN Account:
You'll need an active VPN account to test whether it's working. If you have a VPN account but haven't used it in a while, you can test it at https://gfe.vpn.va.gov/remoteupdate ALERT! WARNING https was broken when I tried this on 2015-09-11 (RG); this may not be secure. Log in with vha09\VaUserName and VaPassword. If your VPN access is working, it will tell you that your account is active and has been renewed for 90 days.

Help desk numbers:
  • VPN helpdesk 855-673-4357 option 6 then 1
  • VA Help Desk: 615-225-6500 (may now redirect to the 855 number above)
  • VINCI Help Desk: this is a different number that you can get from the VPN helpdesk.

Check your VA email:
Once you've remoted into a server, you can check your VA email using https://webmail.va.gov/ from the installed browser, which is usually IE with paralyzing security settings. I still like this better than the remote webmail app in the R03 apps folder.
