SAS at VUMC

At VUMC, the SAS suite is delivered to users using a central server. Licenses to run SAS on individual workstations are no longer available for a reasonable price.

The easiest way to run SAS is to connect to the SAS server using a web browser. The web application is called "SAS Studio". There is also a Windows only application called "SAS Enterprise Guide". Enterprise Guide is basically a more full featured version of SAS Studio. For most of us, SAS Studio will the most appropriate choice.

To begin using SAS Studio, copy and paste this URL into your web browser: https://sas.app.vumc.org/SASStudio/ (if that URL doesn't work, try: https://sasmidtierwp.hs.it.vumc.io/SASLogon). The web app should work with most any web browser. When asked for you username and password, use your vunetid and epassword.

Please see the links below for documentation.

SAS Studio

SAS Studio is a development application for SAS that you access through your web browser. This is probably the tool for most of us. We are used to writing SAS from scratch rather than using wizards so SAS Studio's more minimal wizards are not a problem. SAS Enterprise Guide's wizard and menu system is more extensive, but it runs on Windows only. A great benefit of SAS Studio is that it runs in the browser so nothing has to be installed.

Before connecting to the SAS Studio server, A user's computer must be logged on to the Vanderbilt Active Directory domain or be connected via VPN.

See https://it.vanderbilt.edu/security/secure-communications/remote-access/ for instructions on downloading and installing the VPN client. Be sure to use the VUMC (not VU) instructions when there is a choice.

Linux Note: Vanderbilt's VPN download page for Linux (https://it.vanderbilt.edu/security/secure-communications/remote-access/linux-download.php), states that the "Pulse Secure Linux Client - Ubuntu/Debian Installer" is "not compatible with VUMC SSL VPN". As of 7/10/2017, this client will, if fact, work with the VUMC VPN.

SAS Enterprise Guide

SAS Enterprise Guide is a point-and-click, menu- and wizard-driven tool that "empowers users to analyze data and publish results". SAS Enterprise Guide is a Microsoft Windows client application.

SAS Office Analytics

SAS Office Analytics is a suite of products that enables one to use SAS in Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook). This is a set of add-ins for Word, Excel, etc. Runs on Windows only.

Purchasing SAS

SAS is purchased through the VUMC Software Store (https://www.vumc.org/it/softwarestore). Click on the “Search VUMC Software Store Catalog” link and enter SAS in the search box. You will see an item “SAS Office Analytics Win Client Subscription...”. Then click on SHOP to make the purchase.

In May 2017, the department bought 15 SAS subscriptions. Most SAS users in the department will be using one of these 15 subscriptions. If you buy a SAS subscription individually, then there will be a few steps to follow. Once you have been notified that your purchase has been approved follow the instructions in the Software Store.

  • Log on to the software store and click on the Hello icon at the top right next to the little shopping cart icon.
  • Select “Your Account/Orders”. Record the order number for SAS; you’ll need it later.
  • Click on View Details for your SAS order.
  • Scroll down and find the “Installation instructions link” and read the instructions.
