The Department of Biostatistics

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

Statistical Thinking in Biomedical Research

October 7, 14, 21, 28, November 4, 11, 18 2004

The Department of Biostatistics and the Division of Continuing Medical Education is offering a 7-week course on the statistical principles involved in designing, analyzing, and interpreting experiments and clinical studies. This course will also better equip participants for critically reviewing research articles. The course is aimed at the following investigators:
  1. Clinical researchers
  2. Basic researchers
  3. Residents and fellows interested in becoming researchers
  4. Health services, outcomes, and epidemiologic researchers
  5. Physicians interested in learning some basic tools used in evidence-based medicine
  6. Students in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program taking the course for credit
No mathematical sophistication is assumed, and the course will not emphasize formulas. Some of the topics to be discussed are measurement issues, experimental design, data quality, precision of estimates, P-values vs. confidence intervals, sample size estimation, effective graphical displays, handling multiple measurements per subject (time-response or dose-response data), reporting results, basics of multivariable models, and how to collaborate effectively with a biostatistician.

The text for the course is Essential Medical Statistics, Second Edition by Betty R Kirkwood and Jonathan AC Sterne (Blackwell Publishing). The book is available in the Medical School Bookstore.

Instructors for the course are faculty members in the Department of Biostatistics. We plan to offer the course at least twice per year. All classes are held on Thursday evenings, 5:30pm-7:00pm in Light Hall Room 208. Snacks will be provided. Course participants may receive CME credit.

For more information see the web site for the course, http://biostat.mc.vanderbilt.edu/twiki/bin/view/Main/ClinStat. The fee for the course is $25. Participants are required to read the assigned material in advance of each session. Readings for the first session are listed at http://biostat.mc.vanderbilt.edu/twiki/bin/view/Main/STBRsylConcepts.

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis and is limited to 100 persons per session. To enroll, please contact Suzanne.bateman@vanderbilt.edu.
