Biostatistics Weekly Seminar

Monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic in Puerto Rico

Rafael Irizarry, PhD
Chair of the Department of Data Sciences at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Professor of Applied Statistics at Harvard and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Professor of Biostatistics at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

In this talk, I will describe how we helped Puerto Rico build a system to gather and share SARS-2-Cov testing, COVID-19 hospitalization and deaths, and vaccination data. I will start the talk by describing my experience estimating excess mortality after hurricane Marķa and how this motivated collaborations during the pandemic. I will then describe the interactive data visualization and summarization tools we build and how these were used to inform the public and make decisions. Finally, I will describe how we organized and analyzed vaccines and outcomes to keep track of effectiveness and how this changed with time since vaccination and new variants.
