---+++ Department of Biostatistics Seminar/Workshop Series ---+ The Role of Education in Biostatistical Consulting with Medical and Health Science Researchers ---++ Robert A. Oster, Ph.D. ---+++ Associate Professor, Division of Preventive Medicine
Senior Biostatistician and Scientist, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Department of Medicine
University of Alabama at Birmingham ---+++ Wednesday, March 4, 1:30-2:55pm, MRBIII Conference Room 1220 ---+++ Intended Audience: Persons interested in applied statistics, statistical theory, epidemiology, health services research, clinical trials methodology, statistical computing, statistical graphics, R users or potential users When conducting clinical and/or health science research, medical students, graduate students in health science fields, residents, postdoctoral fellows, medical faculty, and health science faculty often seek consultation with biostatisticians about study design, data analysis, and interpretation of research findings. In this talk, the role of biostatistical training during consultations with these students, residents, fellows, and faculty is examined. In addition, the characterizations of the connections between biostatistical consultation and education are reviewed. Results of research that was performed to obtain information on these topics are presented. These results show that the need and the opportunity exist for specialized biostatistical instruction during one-on-one sessions between a consulting biostatistician and medical and graduate health science students, researchers, and faculty. Other recent work performed in this area is also reviewed. In addition, potential applications to NIH/NCRR-funded Centers for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) and NIH/NCI-funded Comprehensive Cancer Centers (CCC) are discussed. Finally, ideas for a future prospective study examining consulting experiences of biostatisticians are presented.
