Wikis and Collaborative Tools for Professional Development

Mary Banach, PhD, MPH

We go to graduate school and take courses to learn our practice but no sooner do we graduate then that information is already dated. After 20 years of managing HIV clinical trials, Mary returned to graduate school at Berkeley to work with Rogers Hall and Mark Holodniy on how HIV clinicians learn how to treat HIV patients - particularly those patients who have become resistant to a first or second line HIV therapy. This research has led Mary into a career looking at the best tools and the best ways of collaborating new findings and changing practice. Wikis are wonderful tools for developing and communicating in professional education. Mary is currently Program Manager for the CTSpedia. This is a joint project of the CTSA with the server and programming staff at Vanderbilt in Frank Harrell's group. The CTSpedia started out by linking biostatisticians and epidemiologists in clinical research at CTSA institutions throughout the United States and has now expanded to include FDA and pharmaceutical statisticians working on best statistical graphics. Thanks to a group of very collaborative members we are able to listen to the users and upgrade and change the CTSpedia as our community changes and requests new and better educational materials.
