VUMC Learning Health System Biostatistics Interest Group
A forum for collaboration, learning and teaching as we develop this rapidly evolving field through research and practice.
Goal: To lead VUMC’s approach to using data to drive health and health care in the context of a learning health system.
IOM: A learning health system is one in which science, informatics, incentives, and culture are aligned for continuous improvement and innovation, with best practices seamlessly embedded in the delivery process and new knowledge captured as an integral by-product of the delivery experience.
Approach:
- Develop working groups/thematic areas within which research and education can be promulgated. Use the working groups as vehicles to actively pursue joint projects.
- Use regularly scheduled group meetings to solve specific learning health system problems of relevance to biostatistics.
- Provide opportunities to present work-in-progress (WIP) to gather feedback and ideas, and to share solutions to research problems.
Challenges: Limitations of the electronic health record; collision of cultures between good science and operational decision making; necessity of frequent use of observational data; evolving specialty with much opportunity for methods development
Meeting schedule: Monthly, 1hr
Format: Informal with standing agenda (new business/ideas; working group updates; solution session; WIP)
