Policies relating to laptop computers (draft)

• All laptops purchased using department funds must run Linux as their operating system. Dual booting with other operating systems is allowed, but we support only Linux.

• We will install the same version of Linux on laptops as we run on our desktop computers.

• We don't support Microsoft Office in general and especially on laptops. Individuals' discretionary funds may be used to purchase Office.

• The IT staff will recommend a laptop from one of the big vendors (Dell, HP, etc.). If department funds are used for the purchase we will install Linux exclusively or in a dual boot configuration when the computer arrives.
