Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center, Department of Biostatistics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Wednesday, April 28, 1:30-2:30pm, MRBIII Conference Room 1220

The Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC) is a research center residing in the Department of Biostatistics at UNC-CH with the purpose of engaging in collaborative, multi-center clinical and epidemiological studies. The center’s mission is “to improve public health by coordinating important health research, developing innovative research methodology, and providing training in the application of research methods.” Established in 1971 as the Lipids Research Clinic Data Coordinating Center, the CSCC is the oldest, continuously funded NIH coordinating center in the US. Through its rich history, the center has been involved in landmark studies that have changed the practice of medicine, beginning with the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial linking effective cholesterol-lowering treatment with reduction in incident heart disease (JAMA 1984). Today, the center houses approximately 90 faculty, staff, and students involved in national and international clinical trials, observational studies, and patient registries in a variety of disease areas. For this seminar, an overview of coordinating center operations will be provided, including the management structure and development strategy in use at the CSCC. The potential for student involvement in coordinating center projects will also be discussed. In addition, aspects of clinical trial coordination for government-sponsored research will be compared and contrasted with coordination of pharmaceutical clinical trials.
