K3B will complain about not having any SCSI devices if the cdwriter is using ATAPI. It also may give errors about some of the packages it uses, including problems concerning user priveleges.

Solution
  1. In /boot/grub/menu.lst, change hdd=ide-cd to hdd=ide-scsi.
  2. Add the line ide-scsi in /etc/modules.
  3. Delete /dev/cdwriter and create a new link for /dev/cdwriter pointing to /dev/scd0.
  4. Make sure the user is a member of the disk and cdrom groups.
  5. Use apt-get install k3b to update the k3b package.
