Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that associate with disease risk. The findings from these studies provide important insights into genetic and biological mechanisms of disease. There has been interest in re-purposing the findings from GWAS to develop polygenic risk scores for the purpose of developing clinical tools for predicting disease risk. While there is considerable enthusiasm to move forward with clinical implementation of these tools, their utility is not well-established. This talk will present a clinically-oriented perspective on the potential role of polygenic risk scores in clinical medicine.
