Statisticians on the Inside: Thoughts on writing fundable grants and protocols

Laura Lee Johnson, PhD

Statistician, Office of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
NIH US Department of Health and Human Services

Wednesday, May 21, 9:00-10:00am, MCN, C2209

As grant application lengths potentially shorten how do you make everything fit? When an application has been rewritten twenty times, what gets missed? We will discuss NCCAM’s Office of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs’ most common queries to investigators about their submitted applications, many with potentially fundable scores. At first glance not all items appear statistical in nature, but each relates to the ability to analyze the data and draw conclusions at the end of the study. We also will discuss a few keys for successful methodology applications. This talk is for statisticians and non-statisticians alike and will be of interest to anyone involved in writing grant applications or conducting clinical research.
