Statistical Modeling in the Wild: Data Science in Practice

Jesse Spencer-Smith, PhD
Director of Enterprise Data Science
IT&S, HCA Healthcare

Business leaders across industries are maturing in their thinking about the uses and implications of data science solutions. They are asking deeper and wider ranging questions. Previously, a data scientist could solve a problem by building a predictive model and putting it into production. Now there is a growing need to explain predictions, to provide assessments of likely outcomes based on differing scenarios, and to address probable causality. Data scientists with statistical training and skilled in probabilistic programming will be in growing demand across industries. This talk will frame the existing situation, the challenges data scientists and consumers of data science solutions face, and explore opportunities in the intersection of statistics, probabilistic programming, ethics and subject matter expertise.
