Several latent variable methods, including principal component and bifactor analysis, and their application in first- and second-order survey scaling and establishing internal consistency reliability, will be discussed. Specific survey examples will include the SF-36 Health Survey, Vanderbilt Transplant Center Patient Satisfaction Inventory, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the initial development of the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology Quantitative Dizziness Questionnaire.
