How To Get Automatically Emailed Custom Searches On NCBI (PubMed)

  1. Go to the National Center for Biotechnology Information NCBI.
  2. Go to My NCBI (upper right corner) and click register for an account (below the sign in button); direct link to register.
    • Include the email address where you want to received the email updates.
  3. If you just registered, you'll be signed in. Otherwise, sign in now. Go back to My NCBI.
  4. Click create some saved searches within the saved searches box; direct link.
  5. Select the database you want. It defaults to PubMed.
  6. Click the Advanced link below the search text box.
    • You can shortcut this step and the next if you know PubMed's search tags, e.g. enter LastName FirstInitial[Author] in the search text box.
  7. Create your custom search, e.g. select the author field and enter LastName FirstInitial. A dropdown index list will let you see if your name is registering in their authors list. You may wish to use your entire FirstName to reduce the number of false positive hits your receive or just your LastName to maximize the search's sensitivity.
  8. Review your search results. If satisfied, click Save search (below the search text box). Click the save button to confirm on the page that comes up.
  9. Specify your email preferences on the page that follows, e.g. email up to 200 entries in summary format on the 1st day of the month, email even if no new results were found (if selected you'll get an email saying no new results found). The summary format includes the paper's title, authors, and PMID.
  10. Click save and you're done.
