• Good News
    • Lily Wang’s R01 was scored in the top 5%. Leena Choi has a paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics.

People

  • Promotions: Congratulations to Peggy Schuyler who has been promoted to Research Nurse Specialist IV and to Sharon Phillips who has been promoted to Assistant in Biostatistics.
  • New staff: Yan Hu and Wei Wang have joined the department as biostatisticians II. Linda Wilson has joined the department as an administrative assistant III.
  • Departures: Aixiang Jiang is leaving the department to pursue her PhD degree. Visiting scholars Takashi and Ikuko Funatogawa have returned to Japan after two years with the department.
  • Simple Beginnings PhD Lab Coat Ceremony 2011
  • The strategic retreat has been planned and the date set for 8/22/2011. The department leaders will discuss, among other things, space, how to manage reducing collaborative effort due to teaching, and new recruiting strategies.

Service

  • Heart Walk 2011 Thanks to Chang Yu and Ben Saville who have led the campaign during the past few years.
    • Heart Walk 2011 is scheduled to be held in October. We need one or two volunteers to lead our participation in this important event.

Quality

  • CQI update: The CQI meeting will be held 8/4/2011 at 9:00am in the large conference room, and everyone is welcome to attend. We need more faculty involvement in the CQI projects.
  • Enhancing authorship policy: The authorship policy is being drafted. BCC’s policy needs to be merged with the current department policy. If anyone has input, they can send it to Jeffery as he is still finalizing it.

Growth & Finance

  • The FY12 budget letter was received from VUSM, and the budget was approved at the same rates as FY11. The school wants us to be very careful when creating new faculty positions as Vanderbilt is in a precarious position financially.
  • VUMC is expected to spend $5M in bridge funding this year ($1.5M last year). If your grant is scored, you will be eligible for bridge funding from Vanderbilt.
  • The first year of BCC has been successful, and we plan to expand BCC to Cancer Biostatistics. The Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) will function as before in supporting new grant development for the Cancer Center members. Existing projects may be funded through BCC with the same rate.
  • Skype will be available in the small conference room.
  • We are always trying to add space.
  • Graduate students will report on the 28th of this month.

Innovation

  • The new graduate students will participate in the lab coat ceremony. The department is going to give them gifts in addition to the white coats — something math/statistics oriented and preferably practical (e.g. slide rule/abacus/caliper).
