Electrical Appliances Policy

Electrical appliances in individual offices are strongly discouraged:

  • Refrigerators
  • Microwaves
  • Coffee makers
  • Toaster ovens
  • Coffee cup heaters
  • Air purifiers

These items represent serious fire and electrical hazard and their use should be discontinued. Shared appliances are available in the break room. We ask everyone to use this area, as it will also help us foster informal communication among faculty and staff.

Additionally, everyone should comply with the VUMC Policy SA50-10.01 D

Staff/Faculty Personal and department-owned Non-Biomedical Electrical Equipment

Staff/Faculty Personal and department-owned Non-Biomedical Electrical Equipment

  • The following list of staff/faculty's personal electrical devices are prohibited from being used in all medical center areas: portable heaters, hot plates, extension cords.
  • In general, staff/faculty's personal electrical devices should be discouraged from use in the medical center.
  • Any coffee makers, microwave heating units, toaster ovens, or other electrical equipment must be UL listed.
  • Medical center departments have the responsibility for visual inspection of personal and department-owned non-biomedical electrical items for obvious physical hazards, e.g., frayed cords, broken cases, etc.
  • Toaster ovens and microwave units in break rooms or other areas where commercial hoods are not installed are used for reheating or toasting food only, not for cooking. Toaster ovens in break rooms, etc. are labeled "Use for REHEATING/TOASTING FOODS ONLY. No cooking of raw meats."
  • Where microwave or toaster ovens are used for reheating food, the department has a fire extinguisher placed in close proximity (within 20 feet).
  • If there is a question about the safe use of an item, contact CES.
  • The medical center/clinic is not responsible for the loss or damage or personal property.
