People

Welcome to Steve Ampah (Biostatistician II) who will start work on May 1, 2011. His supervisor is David Afshartous, and he’ll be the staff biostatistician in the Hearing & Speech Sciences Collaboration and the Perioperative Research Center in Anesthesiology.

Amy Graves (Biostatistician II) will start in Fall and will work with the Delirium group (Wes Ely, Ayumi Shintani and Jennifer Thompson).

Welcome to John Bock (Office Assistant II) who started work on 3/28/11.

There are several good candidates for both faculty and staff positions. All our hard work at ENAR recruitment is paying off.

Staff Biostatistician retreat is being planned for May 20, 2011. Meridith Blevins and Pengcheng Lu are taking charge.

We need a faculty volunteer for a five minute research presentation at the Department wide meeting on 4/20.

Quality

Please remember to keep your CV and biosketch up to date.

Deadline for the annual conflict of interest submission is coming up, but we are in a very good shape. Thank you everyone for timely cooperation. Other topics where many people have not complied are: fire safety, credo signing and emergency preparedness. Please check your status. Shannon Ontiveros, Director, Faculty Orientation and Training Office will present at the May 4th faculty meeting.

In light of recent tornado scare, please check our department's evacuation plan. The administrative team will make it easy to find it.

Growth & Finance

BCC is underway, and we have received mostly positive feedback. So far approximately 20 staff biostatisticians and IT staff are in the BCC.

Staff biostatisticians had a meeting to discuss the BCC and submitted an "extremely well thought out" list of questions to the chair. These will be discussed in the staff biostatistician meeting on 4/7.

Remember to bill for everything that is related to the project under BCC. Supervisors need to keep track of his/her mentee's work load (how many hours for BCC per week). The current model is 35 hours of billable hours.

Innovation

Our proposal for the graduate program was approved in Faculty Senate on 3/3. The next step is approval from the Board of Trust on 4/29 but we anticipate no difficulties there. So far, we have accepted 3 students each to doctoral and masters courses. There is one more spot left for each.

Best regards,

CQI Communications Team

Frank Harrell, Yu Shyr, Dan Byrne, Tatsuki Koyama, Linda Stewart, and Lynne Berry
