---++ Department of Biostatistics Seminar/Workshop Series ---+ What you don’t know will hurt you: A series of studies on the impact of loss to follow-up in monitoring and evaluation of HIV/AIDS care and treatment programs in East Africa. ---+++ Constantin T. Yiannoutsos, !PhD, Professor of Biostatistics, RM Fairbanks School of Public Health In a “rubber meets the road” situation, missing data methods come to the rescue of routine clinical program data, to contribute to policy and decision making at a global scale. I will present a number of studies that use established statistical methods to address serious biases emanating from structural deficiencies of monitoring and evaluation systems in HIV care and treatment settings, particularly in the resource-limited setting in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. I describe how inverse probability weighting and inverse probability of censoring weighting methods, long adored by causal modelers, statisticians and epidemiologists, can be used to assist in policy and decision making on a global scale; decisions that touch the lives of millions of people, involve billions of dollars and affect the fate of entire nations. In the process, I describe the feeling of being a statistician working in the nexus of research and policy and provide a call to action for similarly minded (bio)statisticians to leave their back rooms, their theorems and their models, and get their hands “dirty” to affect change for a better world.
