Linux Setup notes for Xerox Phaser 6250 dp printer

17-Mar-2004 : These instructions have changed. There is a new ppd file name and a slightly different device name. If you earlier downloaded the file /usr/share/cups/model/xr_p6250.ppd, you should delete that file and run through these steps again.

  • place the file /usr/share/cups/model/xr_6250dp.ppd (this file is attached below)
  • Command line configuration
    • lpadmin -p color2 -L "biostatistics" -D "Xerox Phaser 6250DP" -P /usr/share/cups/model/xr6250dp.ppd -v socket:// -E
  • GUI configuration method
    • use Control Center (kcontrol) to make a queue (called it color2)
    • K --> Settings --> Control Center
    • Peripherals --> Printers
    • Right click in upper panel; left click on "Add printer/class..." and follow the prompts
      • backend selection should be "Network Printer (TCP)"
      • printer address and port is 9100
      • click on Other button for Printer Model Selection; navigate to /usr/share/cups/model/xr6250dp.ppd
      • take defaults on rest of choices
  • questions:
    • does this get proper postscript function?

Windows (win4lin) setup notes for the Xerox Phaser 6250 printers (color2 and color3)

Xerox seems to change their web site from time to time so these URLs might be wrong. They are correct as of 26 Feb 2008.

  • download the printer driver package and run it. It will unpack its files into c:\6250ps (
  • download the Phaser Port (TCP/IP) Utility for Windows 95/98/Me (
  • Install the Phaser Port utility by running phaserport.exe. You will need to enter the IP address for the appropriate printer. When the Phaser Port installation finishes, it will kick off the add printer wizard to install the driver software.
    • In the Add Printer Wizard, click Next. Choose Local printer, then click Next.
    • The Manufacturers and Printers dialog box is displayed. Click Have Disk and enter the path to the driver (c:\6250).
    • Click OK.
    • Select your printer from the list (Phaser 6250DP), then click Next.
    • In the Available ports list, select the port you created during the first part of the installation and click Next.
    • Give the driver a name that will show in your Printers window (e.g. "color2") or leave the default name. You can also choose to make this driver your default Windows driver. Click the Next button.
    • You can choose to send a test print to the printer to test your connection.
    • Click Finish and your driver installation is complete. You are returned to the setup program and prompted to restart your computer.

Adjusting the Color Registration

  1. Press the Down Arrow and scroll to Troubleshooting.
  2. Press OK.
  3. Press the Down Arrow and scroll to Print Quality Problems.
  4. Press OK.
  5. Select Color Registration.
  6. Press OK.
  7. Press the OK key to print this page.
  8. To adjust the color registration, select Adjust Cyan and press the OK key.
    1. Using the page just printed, select the number for the heaviest Cyan area.
    2. The Cyan lines above that number should form a straight line with the black lines. (2.25KB)
    3. Enter that number by using the Down Arrow or Up Arrow keys.
    4. Press OK.
  9. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for Adjust Magenta and Adjust Yellow.
