Department Publications Database

The following instructions will help you use this database (if the article can be found in PubMed):

  1. Click on the following link: PubMed
  2. Click on Limits. Published in the Last: Choose Specify date range.
  3. Enter 2009/01/01 to 2009/12/31.
  4. In the “Search” field at the top, enter your last name-first initial middle initial, e.g., Smith-JA.
  5. Click Search.
  6. Open the Department database in a second window: dbconnect
  7. Enter your VUNETID and E-Password. Log in.
  8. Click on Publications, Publications Home.
  9. Enter the PMID in the input box at the top of the page. Click Create.
    This takes you into edit mode where some of the fields will already be completed. In addition the PubMed link will take you to Medline for the paper.
  10. Ignore "Misc. Key" for now.
  11. Enter Publication type and type of paper.
  12. Select the journal name from the drop-down box. If it is not available, choose “Add a new journal.” Then copy and past Journal Name (listed after JT in the Medline display in PubMed). Please make sure to capitalize major words in the journal name.
  13. Ignore the Journal URL, Impact Factor, Circulation, and Prestige Factor. These will be updated later.
  14. Select a project this publication is related to. Please let Linda Stewart know if there is a project not listed here.
  15. Select the department and division that this publication is associated with. Please request a department or division from Linda Stewart if it is unavailable.
  16. If the author information has not been filled automatically, enter your name under Author and your author position. Enter any other co-authors from our department.
  17. Copy and paste the URL for the paper.
  18. Submit.
  19. Repeat for your remaining 2009 publications. Modify. Add a new publication record.
  20. To capture publications that are not listed in PubMed follow these steps:
    1. Use the Web of Science site: http://www.isiknowledge.com/?DestApp=WOS&locale=en_US
    2. Select Advanced Search
    3. In the search box cut enter the following: OG=VANDERBILT AND AU=SMITH-JA
    4. Change the date range to "From 2009 to 2009".
    5. Click on Search. Then click on the number below Results.
