Current Priorities in the Department of Biostatistics

  • Faculty recruitment: Recruit leader and support staff for Data Coordinating center; recruit Phd Associate and Assistant Professors.

  • Staff recruitment: Recruit Biostatisticians I, II, III, and Administrative Assistant II.

  • Financial management: In the midst of awaiting feedback from the Dean's office on FY07 budget, numerous year-end activities are underway such as updating center numbers in BA3, closing all encumbrances in the GL and completing journal entries (JEs). Individual centers have been set up for faculty receiving support from Institutional development. The department will provide 1275s for any updates to be included in eDog.

  • Payroll management: The Annual Increase Form (AIF) for staff was submitted to Medical Payroll on 6-16; letters need to be completed. Personnel action forms (PAFs) and letters for faculty have been completed. Effectively coordinate constantly changing funding support and develop systems to ensure proactive payroll management.

  • Grants and contracts management: Regularly communicate with faculty and staff regarding funding changes to increase accountability for time and effort reporting; generate department report with current and pending research commitments; review and analyze data to plan future funding. Team members are in the process of gathering Biosketches and completing a budget for July 3 resubmission of R01. All restricted center must have a positive cash or zero balance at year-end. We have been working with Finance to set up receivables and issue invoices for pharmaceutical and other contracts. In addition, we are contacting all contracts administrators regarding timely payment.

  • Space and Facilities: Continue planning for space in VICTR (Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research).

  • General:
    • Articles in The Reporter about new faculty and other happenings
    • Articles critiquing published papers
    • Ongoing series of articles "What Went Wrong?"
    • Hire a "data cleanup" programmer
    • Create a "one stop shop" for data management, cleaning, and analysis
