DeMets et al (Statistics in Medicine25:3415) have several ideas and document the shortage of trained biostatisticians
"Most graduate students do not get adequate training in non-technical issues such as consulting, oral and written communication, leadership and management."
Training programs should be interdisciplinary with a co-mentor beyond the department, e.g., a biomedical researcher co-advisor;trainees could rotate through biomedical research labs
Kennedy at al (TAS 61:120 May 2007) has a nice article on training grants from NIH and proposal writing
Shannon McWeeney - Oregon CTSA: Teach biostatistics wins and examples of major influence
Paul Velleman, Cornell - Teach guidance for making statistical judgments
Need to teach ethical conduct of rsearch and data ethics
Laurel Beckett UC Davis CTSA: Have biostat grad students partner with biomedical research investigator trainees / postdocs. Both should have a biostat and a biomedical researcher mentor.
