Biostatistician, Author, Computer Scientist, Medical Researcher.

Daniel William Byrne is an American biostatistician, educator, and faculty member at Vanderbilt University best known for promoting randomized, pragmatic trials to assess how predictive models and artificial intelligence can be used to improve health outcomes in a learning healthcare system.

Born: January 21, 1958, (age 63), Brooklyn, New York, U.S.

Spouse: Loretta Byrne (m. 1985).

Children: Michael Paul Byrne, Virginia Leigh Byrne

Education: State University of New York at Albany, New York Medical College

Known for: The Cornelius Project -Real-time predictive modeling in healthcare,

Medical statistics, Design of experiments.

Quotes:

Randomization is much more important than complex statistical adjustments.

Randomization needs to be used much more often in medicine - this is our best option for improving health outcomes and lowering costs.

The learning healthcare system model, which randomizes patients during routine clinical care to one of two options - for which there is equipoise - is not only ethical but essential. In fact, not randomizing and not learning is unethical.

Research

Daniel William Byrne is a faculty member at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He has received multiple awards for his teaching, research and publications. He is an internationally recognized predictive analytics expert with over three decades experience in healthcare risk modeling to improve patient outcomes. His book is “Publishing Your Medical Research”.

Daniel Byrne is known for his Cornelius project, which is a translational research program of how predictive models can be used to focus health care prevention to reduce hospital complications and chronic diseases. He showed that real-time predictive models based on commonly available hospital data can be automated into a hospital's electronic health record to display a probability of future complications. Furthermore, he showed that it was possible to test whether using these predictive models to focus the hospital's prevention efforts improved patient outcomes using rigorous randomized controlled trials. His Cornelius team is currently developing and testing predictive models for hospital readmission, pressure ulcers, blood clots, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, patient falls, sepsis, and hypoglycemia. By applying rigorous scientific methods in a hospital setting this work is helping to define the modern learning health-care system and show how precision medicine can impact the health outcomes of patients.
